Preparation

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) is not just Bursitis!

Persistent hip pain on the outer side? It might not be what you think.

GTPS used to be commonly called "Trochanteric Bursitis", but here's the twist! Bursitis only accounts for about 20% of cases. The main culprit? Gluteal Tendinopathy - this is damage to the gluteus medius and minimus tendons.

🎯Risk Factors:

✅FEMALE - due to differences in hip anatomy and hormone levels

⏲️Age - more common after 40

🔺Increased Q-Angle - a wider hip structure can stress the tendons more

⚖️Muscle imbalances and poor biomechanics

🧠Diagnosis is Clinical - based on your history and movement, a cluster of orthopedic tests. Imaging such as Ultrasound or MRI may help rule out other issues.

💆‍♀️Manual Osteopathic Therapy may relieve tension, improve mechanics, and promote healing by supporting the muscles around the hip.

🔑REHABILITATION is KEY: Progressive loading exercises strengthen the weakened gluteal tendons - this is not just about rest! Rest alone will not fix tendinopathy.

👣Daily movement matters too - improving walking mechanics and posture reduces strain on your hips.

⭐If you are dealing with lateral hip pain, do not accept a diagnosis of "Bursitis". The picture is much more complex, but treatable!
